So it was that on the Friday before Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year, Roy Innis, chairman of the New York-based Congress of Racial Equality, stood before the cameras to push the magic button. Instrumental in organizing the Freedom Rides, and a sponsor of the 1963 March on Washington, CORE was a natural choice to open trading that day. Not so intuitive was the man Innis brought along to stand at his right hand: Dennis Bassford, the blond, dimpled, 51-year-old co-founder and CEO of Moneytree, a Seattle-based company that’s been widely criticized for preying on minorities.

How could these companies be so bad for so long? Clearly the combination of a very un-innovative business culture, visionless management and overly generous labor contracts explains a lot of it. It led to a situation whereby General Motors could make money only by selling big, gas-guzzling S.U.V.’s and trucks. Therefore, instead of focusing on making money by innovating around fuel efficiency, productivity and design, G.M. threw way too much energy into lobbying and maneuvering to protect its gas guzzlers.
